Dead Betty returns with its first full-length album and new permanent member, Skip Sales, on tuned percussion and accordion. The band expands on the melodic and textural themes first explored in its eponymous EP and produces a work that is both familiar and transformative. Acoustic guitars intertwine with marimba and vibraphone, banjo and pedal steel. Seemingly simple at first listen, each track contains hidden complexity that will reward repeated listening.
This time out the band is augmented by legendary Laszlo Spatchcock drummer, Rosemary's Baby, who imparts new power and drive to the sound. And providing drums on the tracks that RB doesn't play on we have local Lushwood Hills favourites, The Barbarous Thumpers of IASPA, bringing ethnic texture to the folky melodies. This is roots music for the 20s that is catchy, hypnotic, daring and brave. With this release the band further carves out its own unique genre. There is no looking back.
